I watched this movie last night at the recommendation of professor Michael Djordjevitch from the <a href="http://www.beauxartsatelier.org/">NYC Beaux Arts Atelier</a>. If you get a chance the Atelier is a wonderful organization which gives intensive courses in classical architecture and drawing ranging from 1 week intensive courses to 1 year programs (I've been meaning to take the 1 week course myself). The movie is notable for its intricate and daring sets which are a riff on modern architecture and urban planning -they make this funny movie all the better (<i>thro.out greek style</i>)! Be sure to add Playtime to your netflix queue, you won't regret it.

Filoli Ballroom

It's the home gym of Warren Beatty in <em>Heaven Can Wait</em>! The space was restored for the movie along with other parts of the house and impresses everyone who enters it, as it should!<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483575347693657234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjioQa2sAtZF8FSqxPyd-Qy827uC1wYA3ySdIcCwnOLti5P21LbFxZ20aaUl-KyBq0tk49YFtfOU6ANBKYgfepntwL1Q4GPY2o9xQTRR1WMQtgEqx8N8UESGlIYitRVDdGZJQFejBQ0Dyvd/s400/ballroom.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />The flowers, seen best in the picture at top, were probably the most beautiful in the house. Not an easy feat as each room has a gorgeous bouquet fresh from the garden. The mixture of bright colors in the pale green room with gilded accents was really striking. Forget the <em>Bagues</em> chandeliers modeled on the ones from the <a href="http://interior-design-pictures.blogspot.com/2009/10/versailles-hall-of-mirrors.html">Hall of Mirrors</a> at Versailles, everyone on the tour noticed the flowers first.<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483575354525170674" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDgX6FX7nnYwxJakjRoa9VXC_uWxw_-Zt0OozVvTZmH5R15A78l9uAJ4ElhQJnqwrTWuaIKZji_-IOj-5jcKMRN30W419CdzerAr2fYRkfiHVQbjUyNuHMKV72atbfb5Riijso-cvcBTQn/s400/fireplace.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 355px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />The murals are the core of the room. They were completed in 1921 by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Peixotto">Ernest Peixotto</a> for the original owner Mr. Bourn after he suffered from a stroke and was unable to leave the house. The murals depict his daughter's beloved castle in Ireland he had gifted to her (Muckross, seen below) which he was unable to visit during his illness.<br /><div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHF512MJkAZQ6LiNSjopsDQIrR7zX1jBAQxIpaN1918z8AnYemIwwavvlRBQuM7R_hGGwbOmsnKH6X6HdAemKJ3PlCUkVlI9XnsU9Q4wGrw7uC5hsXeBW-tC57Jq1s62HYcEPM6fn5Kq-r/s1600/mural.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483575364522759490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHF512MJkAZQ6LiNSjopsDQIrR7zX1jBAQxIpaN1918z8AnYemIwwavvlRBQuM7R_hGGwbOmsnKH6X6HdAemKJ3PlCUkVlI9XnsU9Q4wGrw7uC5hsXeBW-tC57Jq1s62HYcEPM6fn5Kq-r/s400/mural.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 283px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></a>The maguette or model seen below of the Ballroom was gifted to Filoli after the artist's nephew saw the movie <em>Heaven Can Wait</em> and recognized his family's dollhouse! This scale model of the room was created so that Peixotto could work from his studio in the city and plan out the large scale canvases. <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483575371544737954" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMFz03bFdm1S9KLZ7YGuYXtDbyeq6-Xo6qq8Jm5u1-2tiScAzJFBg4sK5eKbF6jCE-LqthNjFW7Kwr2yodxfoDKTpLypQ8nRUMMCidfAUs3rTOpMiaox_ictOw1Ka5GH99BiePa2GN6-s-/s400/model.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 298px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /> <div><div><div>I hope you are looking forward to more of Filoli! While I doubt it will be winning any awards next year (sorry!), I definitely call it a 'must-see' for anyone interested in movies purely for aesthetics. I think my general summation of the film was that it is to Tim Burton what the original Hairspray was to John Waters.</div>

The sets, in particular her house, are shockingly 'au courant'. I loved the cerused oak front doors with 3 panels and modern sidelight. Notice also the Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair in white leather.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgKPzMF5V_ozuCNmhmYTwS6CFkCO-2nL1ulMZ8CKiswVcdWfPzinqqBF1nINEYt4grHzkN1rsbqCsOdGzuxw-gy9d958X4PRtJ6q8xUGxTaH9MddvdZgYwZbt6n8qx436RLvaJKYuZ5MPg/s1600-h/chair+and+tables.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440912445868383426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgKPzMF5V_ozuCNmhmYTwS6CFkCO-2nL1ulMZ8CKiswVcdWfPzinqqBF1nINEYt4grHzkN1rsbqCsOdGzuxw-gy9d958X4PRtJ6q8xUGxTaH9MddvdZgYwZbt6n8qx436RLvaJKYuZ5MPg/s400/chair+and+tables.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 228px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></a> In the living room, this card table and chairs would be welcome in my own home, maybe minus the pink cushions. The barcelona stools in the living room were covered with a yellow nubbly looking fabric, you see the top of one here.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNOBzpMZiVWsTiNbY9vqbPLMRKmZgfYUhl2VeR70Rj7F945GbDJcAXWI6sUD8t-85TU8KoXk_aLHjlf5Gwrnf6BsDmGknBxUrUqQsz6FHimaC_fVqXfs8jNxDy_dJghCA9owcPYdLiIJ93/s1600-h/barcelona+stool+and+chair.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440912435275676466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNOBzpMZiVWsTiNbY9vqbPLMRKmZgfYUhl2VeR70Rj7F945GbDJcAXWI6sUD8t-85TU8KoXk_aLHjlf5Gwrnf6BsDmGknBxUrUqQsz6FHimaC_fVqXfs8jNxDy_dJghCA9owcPYdLiIJ93/s400/barcelona+stool+and+chair.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 211px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></a> Excuse the poor picture quality, but here is a better view of the white leather barcelona chair up on the entry level while down in the living room the corresponding Barcelona stool has the yellow upholstery. Even the sofa looks as if it came from Room and Board last week, not 55 years ago!<br />However, the main reason to watch this movie is the superb acting and even MORE excellent singing. This scene is heart-wrenching and with fantastic sets - meant to show the Oscars of the time. Notice - eating and dancing: Who needs an after party?<br /><object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/T_Ue_7RgVmg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/T_Ue_7RgVmg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />And here as a special treat is 'The man that got away' sung by Judy Garland: You can see why she was such a star!<br /><object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2h3SjisivsA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2h3SjisivsA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />Definitely check out this excellent movie if you get a chance: nominated for 6 oscars. My only complaint would be that it is rather long at 3 hours, but nothing a remote control can't fix! </div></div>

While I loved the movie, what really caught my eye was the house of Harold's mother, Mrs. Chasen. <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318452898628563746" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgwGdaTs_QjsQgXXh9qLzrFof5nx-6XHavvT8TwXwY-cUhpBNSG7WVz4Nb_7IwbXzN82tHeA2yiMBhG6wpv06bKfNThgYjA9Q9BFPhCKrCmhkosiCwmvoUdGLmY9o6ipnImLhErVHbZzU/s400/front+door.JPG" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 269px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />The house really reminds me of the work of John Woolf: mainly because of that canopy over the front door. (Read this great article from Vanity Fair about Woolf by Matt Tyrnauer <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/style/features/2009/03/john-woolf200903">HERE</a>). Classic Woolf, don't you think? From what I could find <a href="http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/5862/xharoldlocations.html">HERE</a> though, the house is actually the The Rose Court Mansion in Hillsborough and many of the scenes were shot inside, even using the actual butler from the house in the movie!<br /><div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR_0JI144cgaD7__cRdmVj4fNXLS39tdm37Vyh6MO82kvLdevlos53o5IFMmAMrRUeUxZgqnRLDWAjtbXD5QkeStaUyNa2GYopAnTrSSSZC0mlRWVZvNwhgMVBpjrxtaYnwRpJEc-9zTY/s1600-h/library.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318452888873439842" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR_0JI144cgaD7__cRdmVj4fNXLS39tdm37Vyh6MO82kvLdevlos53o5IFMmAMrRUeUxZgqnRLDWAjtbXD5QkeStaUyNa2GYopAnTrSSSZC0mlRWVZvNwhgMVBpjrxtaYnwRpJEc-9zTY/s400/library.JPG" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 256px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></a> The home is extremely eclectic inside, but French styles dominate. The classic white lenox lamps, the beautiful chair in the background, simple drapes, big windows. It's just fun for me to share! I had a small, informal movie night & dinner last night for a friend (hi Alex and her mom!). As it was a workday with very little time to get ready, I just used the crockpot for the meal and set the table in just 5 minutes when I got home. I try to keep the silver and china all handy, so it can be taken out at a moment's notice. It just makes even a simple dinner an OCCASION!<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290632507210746050" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgomvInc-HxEoKyiynr5gnKcDoJ3p6wrzyKvlClfDeoNs-oZAjizYgh6z3dPlx5OfYVeOwfJdWZgFdPkTRLN4pe3hSYKJoWOp0Azs9cJKAuZvJ5vMDMHcJ68U4hh1yCKg51wOfH9Yb2IAY/s400/146-4685_IMG.JPG" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />I bought these new gold thread & linen placemats at pottery barn today ( 75% off!) to make the table less formal than a tablecloth. The same antique irish linen napkins as usual, grandmother's silver, my minton dinner plates and my favorite (use it daily) cuckoo pattery by wedgewood for the salad plate. I think it came together nicely! Instead of candles, I just used my small alabaster lamp (sort of like an old fashioned dinner club!). <div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290633432913738354" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy27xBj3EGauOgeG7S7OgDBs_7SF8tY7Ce1-1kemR15aCEJT-pSMEbZIIJjgBlZbBkR1eLe6nXVM2e9HUUzOy3gAvXTBTSYM5evSQjKvMGFP2ojJN56hsPm2eQ1irSY9e_rDDBn-lDt3M/s400/venus+beauty+institute.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 211px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />We watched the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0174330/">Venus Beauty Institute </a>-a WONDERFULLY fun French movie from 1999 that you should all check out (starring Nathalie Baye and Audrey Tautou). We found out that we both have loved her since childhood! I came across a picture of her taken in the early 80s and was surprised to see she was totally recognizeable from herself as a teenager -check this out.<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277419882894700626" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Ir7wTsTzmjnkvGx_qA-IjHYyZQ6sxLWSox74B997Cdayzopxr0938whtX4hi83kz0DH_Cxc99jdP1-g_hg20Mj-CRhzMhvBX1gl33xjCg6g9xYsAuhTNBfrEzR4-v9IT-ju5oRMWo_4/s400/deannadurbin.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 266px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />Born in 1921, she started out with a studio contract in 1935 along with Judy Garland (the other teen singing actress!). After creating many movies though as the singing teenager, she wanted more sophisticated, grown-up roles which studios and audiences were reluctant to see her in. She retired then in 1949, married and moved to France where she continues to live in retirement.<br />This video below shows her at age 14 (with that voice!) in her first movie 'Three smart girls". Definitely check out any of her movies, they're delightful!<br /><object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OwrzxSzrzB4&hl=en&fs=1"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OwrzxSzrzB4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

What, never heard of it? Neither had I till recently, which is surprising: This movie is So fantastic! If you like good acting, good music, good costumes and amazing sets (get the picture?) you will love this movie. It's 3 hours long however, take breaks..... <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264894938463452402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ZaIRfZLZMwW8EdOKaYg8ope1EUv0cfv8yrKw5WSM5XNgHHUsiqnzJk2NxnaRsIQJuvfPYJNIDVDzRZSleU1MuAv1IwnBL8om0dGFrEjmb17u3KDdpA3fmjUxl4m3dPbH432mRUJ3IFU/s400/movie.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 280px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 280px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />Based on the life of actress Gertrude Lawrence, it chronicles her life and search for love, all the while showing clips of many of the shows she was in, her amuzing friendship with Noel Coward and the strained relationship with her daughter on her quest for fame.<br />First the sets: these are some pictures I took of the film, sorry for the poor picture quality! <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264948055511893666" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGcdHyYFwTB3z5392P1AcOEbtUDL_yRt6pemYqegIvll8cH6sZIzt97NLFuXST9ziQ2yCOfSUVUD1WzE6rIRk1a4gmRc5UcHc7Z_A4dtu4Y5qeruv6adNEACbUX-PFTeau1LDs6F0EyIM/s400/142-4283_IMG.JPG" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />This is what caused me to take notice of the sets; her NYC apt. during the 1930's chapter of her life. The walls are gold leafed with a really abstract mural painted on them: antique venetian furniture, beautiful bar, chandelier and beautiful curtains - this is the most glamorous room I've ever seen!<br /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264948068499089186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7oSEnYsv4YRvncfwsCUXM7eDTZ5nSu7K_dUQUAWQl3TN7xYixG5se3zOsl4B3fZsvdlMzxJYv6u5bXB9S6bpya_Z1-WySJuPiujZs-MZA4eC0OEVDW_ik9c3rArCeBowao79Iflj5rhc/s400/142-4285_IMG.JPG" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />Right afterwards was Noel Cowards NYC apartment, also during the 30s. Notice the beautiful woodwork and detailing above. I LOVE a step-down living room and large windows, beautiful white casual upholstery and beautiful lighting. This room looks so modern! Notice the painted backs of the built ins below - an acid yellow (which matched many of the costumes in the scene).<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264948062483978850" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3uT7Adjgeq3B2-PfNWVWH9vQpz-ctJDWOpNWQNCtnqzbmGs-gpKfgZicGJ1uR8msDb_5xvS4kncwmqb7vpIl_w-t2LzAda7b4N1D_0Pgb7t7TpmQmpJWu-wM9E3nZ8oKqZZ6tkuLL9mw/s400/142-4284_IMG.JPG" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />The music: full of standards by greats such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Noel Coward, Kurt Weill and others -it will not disappoint. Julie Andrews was in top form singing and dancing as shown in the clipbelow: her voice is unbelievably smooth and beautiful. An interesting tidbit: Daniel Massey, who played Noel Coward in the film, is actually Coward's godson in real life!<br /><br /><object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/i-26AIqePtQ&hl=en&fs=1"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/i-26AIqePtQ&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br /><div><div><br /><div>Read a full synopsis of the movie <a href="http://www.afi.com/wise/films/star/star.html">HERE</a></div>I loved this movie so much that I've included a link to buy it on amazon on my sidebar -you can get it really inexpensively used! Beau Brummel: this charming man

<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578103387842466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjfWbj3SdoHZJgurvJeyS8ldOQ4IKMxF_M0ROu4JSCBj0TDqBmU4smrAbVCZsSSdTPSRCyLTzB08e8jPOqvsEVtaSYxMcs77vN34aEpwN-u1Fb0wHKkTxntBf59Z5SKHhJ_eLa9LUWqys/s400/cover.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 220px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />I recently watched a wonderful dvd "Beau Brummell: This charming man" about the life of George Brummell (nicknamed Beau for obvious reasons). This movie was a BBC Television drama made in 2006 and based on the biography by Ian Kelly. You've probably all heard of this famous man, but aren't sure why. <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578101966146418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg11d2mQ7n0FIIWwDC1BZ2tIcKDx4_Vc-tLj99HcsHjCiydrQWFVFpSB3MyTqwWOHY7Wh0h_OTcoMylUGp3kRQSDEa5e606SPGYI0lS8EjgXlu4hHkHWQbexVcbanSSWqsiltVNBgiZg8E/s400/brummell.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 350px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 258px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />The handsome James Purefoy (from 'Rome') plays the Regency England dandy who changed male fashion. In an era when men relied on powders, wigs and perfumes in order to appear well groomed and fashionable, Brummell's comparatively simple regiment of common-sense elegance and frequent washing was revolutionary. Matthew Rhys (from brothers and sisters) co-stars as a conniving Lord Byron while the delightful Hugh Bonneville plays the prince and future King George IV.<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578099974460850" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAcG-akRGyzS4JSBe4ivSP1SX_jbZlLAaTlM6Bms8jw4e9cyaoO0aTWO7OTUEyKBRonw9Oji1HfY5IpxT4qMl9807D8XwVOydFYdSzpg7Oq0nNx49xPBu3S-GUe5xHot6eCb9jIJRrJ_o/s400/21773878.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 283px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></div><div></div><div>'Beau' Brummel (1778 - 1840) established fashion that exists today of men wearing understated, fitted dark suits with pants instead of knee britches adorned with an elaborately-knotted tie. He was known to take 5 hours to dress (while being watched by admirers, CREEPY!) and said that it was best to polish shoes with champagne (ever tried that??). He met the Prince Regent while serving his time in the military in the Tenth Light Dragoons. Through this friendship, he soon was promoted to captain by 1796. He resigned shortly afterwards and took up a house in the fashionable Mayfair in order to stay in London. He shortly burned through his rather large inheritance by gambling and shopping. After loosing the patronage of Prince George ( he called him fat to his face - ouch!), he no longer had a get out of jail free card or anyone to pay his debts. He had to flee to France in 1816 to escape debt collectors who threatened his life where he used his friendships once again to get a job as consulate in Caen. Here he died penniless years later in 1840 from complications due to Syphilis in a madhouse, not a pretty way to go.<br /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578098444368098" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0SXLtGRpQIeYJ24GilIwhBI9OiwyYBluGPDwmsQbf-oDcu5GjpV9MXlcnEIH_jkFdOKvgyngw4nZjofiljzHmZ0FphCvjK8eSbT0uzCV_9MggzWP93lkHv77ipe6zQ3pU6-9JHLZb-2Y/s400/277px-BrummellDighton1805.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 185px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /><em>An 1805 caricature of Brummell - compare him with James Purefoy in the movie below<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578207419763458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmlHolW198Sf4XVNcFyLzWSJQMVcu6NFxRTcfG7cd8cpgFL8OvW25DQebT8PeTAQZeefE1QmigfVQq4HCtiU4D4ZJHD-mkW3r2qwOk1EP0TaCNzliDVoG445acRkmEdpCyhEMcoS1bKs/s400/visiting+the+prince.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 396px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 188px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></em>We all owe a debt to 'Beau' as he went against the times and promoted daily grooming: brushing your teeth, taking a daily bath and shaving. He also advocated pants for men and a more natural style (no wigs, powders and perfumes - those were left for the ladies!). <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578103564116162" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGCjNd39ocYhHFPnkZFSiakWF4dG2dRswIXn86K1a5vZmW7uoWHFxzEWCZZPig3suTYKEzZs0q8dXZ29rw4L5CZQ1LYLsRNDBgTHTKNwJka7s351nNM92_PJZ9FQPt_sv6dC8MZJZDpNQ/s400/king+george.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 350px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 258px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></div><div></div><div><em>Hugh Bonneville as the Prince in the previous 'fashion'</em></div><div>This movie is very well made and entertaining filled with great acting and nice eye-candy. Definitely check it out!!<br /></div><div>REVIEWS: <em>Nancy Banks-Smith writing in</em> The Guardian<em> said the film was exquisite to see and very easy to enjoy, stating that, it was one of those plays where the director of photography and the costume and set designers, who normally bring up the rear, led the whole parade. She also compliments Hugh Bonneville for his frighteningly feasible Prince Regent. She concludes that, the Georgians had a natural beauty in their lives which makes ours seem ugly.<br />Jodie Pfarr writing in </em>The Sydney Morning Herald<em> describes the film as an engaging costume drama romp, which provides a fascinating account of the relationship between Brummell and the prince. He calls the show,</em> Queer eye for the straight guy <em>18th-century style, and concludes that the moral of the story is all can be fine and dandy until you tell someone they're fat<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262578195951523042" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0wXP2K-AXkbRUeM5GupsTCl5nt18v_Yfk65zuCVJ_cST3OrWGbZMPkuUOL8RZ-JPW9XzuFhEounLgj5e4PHN7wAmQFfa6_R2KUIHTfCeoNyP2huAfSDTK6DDMZZu5IDuSmZ6xSFANfyc/s400/purefoy_beau086.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 371px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 399px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /></em></div><div>Visit the website for the movie at the BBC <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/features/beau-brummell.shtml">HERE</a> including some clips from the movie.</div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

The secret life of bees

<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259257551724783906" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyYVyk3YnNiFsL2shAYqT3ATmkWk1x1NcwmMyZ8xFKa3uRCPbyX2I-s486nPpnTgnqSTzbbS4dNrPKrq99Qx_5WRrhNNH5ZmbV4CB2IA5mwJYa6EGqA-iFlApSMfchNHzrdNE8pjpL5vg/s400/thesecrete-life-of-bees_movie-poster_073008.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />This past weekend I went to see the movie <em>'The secret life of bees'</em> based on the best-selling book from 2002 by Sue Monk Kidd. You MUST see this movie, it was so good! I went in not knowing much about the story; went purely by the phenomenal cast. That did not disappoint: <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259257543310414226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGk9tbGKHyA_N7yPXumlPUY3LOpxm9mnv3Awmcy-GbXjXwirztSxPHXves0niwqHL7IFPKAecXC1lw2WiOn_yGe7ChTb-fRO_42L6Tn9X5h4JgwdxRe9i2r44ZoVZKEthhxs2tyFtgLN8/s400/dak_hud_flip.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />Each performance was amazing. Jennifer Hudson as Rosaleen Daise redeemed herself after her awful acting on <em>'Sex and the City movie'</em>, Alicia Keys as June Boatwright proves that she can act as well as sing (and how insanely beautiful she is), Queen Latifah as August Boatwright was her awesome loveable self and Dakota Fanning as Lily Owens was brilliant, that little girl has SKILLS.<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259257526384118642" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzodSsnhA2XVsU4jkBBlfWE2v_Rjvtm0AKXxiG4vEElhKlMDPX-osxXD6htCj-N-sMEwN_CCe3vR_1tJ9BdgKTSAuIJq07cC_enQsGoCK4-RmC-jROYJUy1l5qz0hvLqKACssj8FVQLaY/s400/Black%2520Madonna%2520Honey%2520thumb.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" />Without giving any of the plot away, the film deals with civil rights & history, racism, feminism, religion, lonliness and the need to be loved and the search for one's identity. Pretty heavy stuff, huh? While this is a movie that will make you think, it will also make you FEEL. Go and see it tonight, you won't leave with a dry eye! You can read more about the movie online at the <a href="http://www.foxsearchlight.com/thesecretlifeofbees/">official website</a><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259257530636317746" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvLD8JGycJEcwsu-fAJU9fyB9-1RIks8TUEiY2hv5iBSC5mFytFrPMoVfwPzd7RDfKXJWVxyptLJfJeDBmK1yBjk1xO3SgMAeDitZk-MXAKPyhBYbCxrUNCUisYWREEuMG3b-Yg4MZXfY/s400/70264272.jpg" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" /><br /><em>Dakota is turning into a pretty young lady with acting chops!</em>
